Facebook = META: Will VR replace the traditional Internet?
Facebook Inc. it is turning into Meta Platforms Inc. This news was officially presented to the world at the recent Facebook Connect conference. The main figure of the conference was none other than Mark Zuckerberg himself, who presented a new vision for the future of his company. A lot of interesting information appeared during the conference. We learned a lot about the corporation’s current plans. There was no shortage of generalities and understatements that were woven into the far-reaching vision of the Metaverse’s future.
Overall impression
The conference featured many elements and themes that many of us might have expected. The latest developments surrounding Mark Zuckerberg’s character and his passion for the Metaverse are, after all, no secret. This topic has already appeared several times at previous conferences held by him, so the topic of the event itself should not surprise anyone particularly.
Surprisingly, it could have been the scale with which the conference was held. Announcements of the use of new technologies and the vision of the functionality of the new environment were really developed. This was not a typical conference dealing with a single assumption, but rather how fulfilling one vision can change different aspects of our lives. There were many proposals for technological solutions to problems related to immersion in VR, and issues related to the use of virtual reality were raised.; the new design of the glasses was also mentioned, and even the economy of the Metaverse was raised.
We can say that the conference itself was far-sighted, but despite the fact that it touched on many interesting topics and questions, we still heard Zuckerberg speak, very much about future plans and little about what is happening now.
There were, of course, many promises and beautiful words that are really pleasant to listen to, but I personally lacked specifics – announcements, dates, or at least the designation of the first milestone of this widely expanded vision. Despite this far-reaching perspective presented at the conference, however, we managed to capture quite a lot of interesting assumptions that are already causing admiration and interest in the future plans of Meta.

Horizon Home VR
is an application designed to replace the currently functioning Oculus Home. Thanks to the new In the VR app, we can create our own virtual home and invite our friends to it, where we can play games with them, watch videos, or just meet and spend time together. Horizon Home, in my opinion, will be a major step towards creating a full Metaverse space. This is a form through which users themselves will participate in creating this vision, designing new virtual spaces based on their own principles.
EMG Inputs
is one of Zuckerberg’s many ideas for future platform support. META I plan to implement app support VR / AR using neural bracelets. The device will be designed to capture nerve signals and translate them into digital commands. With this solution, we will be able to transfer information from the brain to the hand before our physical hand can make a specific movement. The device will be based on electromyography, and this is Zuckerberg’s next move, related to the acquisition of the startup CTRL-Labs in 2019, whose technology will be used for this purpose.
Metaverse VR Economy
Interesting information related to the Connect conference for me was the economy of mataverse itself and its connection with NFT (non-fungible token). NFTs are mostly used by artists at this point. Thanks to them, they can sell their creations in the form of virtual non-convertible tokens. At the conference, we learned that they will be supported by Meta, so that you can experience your purchased virtual objects in real time (for example, using Horizon Home). The NFT hype hasn’t started yet, and this news is sure to further fuel the growing interest in technology-based tokens. blockchain.

Messenger calls using VR:
Another announcement was the optimization of the messenger app for VR, with which we will be able to combine the capabilities of Facebook Messenger with Oculus glasses. The ability to send messages, read notifications, and communicate with loved ones using virtual reality is a significant step in integrating the Meta Platforms inc.
Codec Avatars ecosystem.
Presented at the conference is a project of realistic avatars that can display our facial expressions in real time with impressive accuracy and bring them to the level of VR. & nbsp; this is an extremely strong step aimed at increasing the immersion of future users. I believe that if the concept presented at the conference comes into force, it can be a breakthrough in the popularity of virtual reality equipment. I strongly recommend that you check out the concept of Codec avatars presented on Facebook Connect – they are sensational.
Cloud computing
Of course, it’s interesting how META wants to combine so many different functions into one piece of hardware. The answer to this question is cloud computing. Thanks to cloud computing, you will be able to process all this data based on the services of a service provider without the need to use software installed on your own hardware. With this technology, we can transfer the burden of service data and computing power to the service provider’s servers, allowing us to freely use the declared functions.
New VR equipment
We have been talking about the new equipment for a long time, but at the conference we managed to learn a little more details. Project Cambria (because this is the name under which the new hardware was introduced) is a mixed reality suite. We know that it should combine VR and AR features and will use a new generation of optics, improved handiwork, and eyetracking features. We still don’t know the exact release date, but we should learn more about this project next year.
Facebook Connect Review
This year, Facebook Connect was certainly different from previous editions of the conference. At this point, we know that in addition to the name itself, Facebook Inc. I also plan to change my priority. The goal of this change is very ambitious and certainly long-term. I’m curious to see if this grand vision of Mark Zuckerberg’s company opportunity will outgrow it.
Of course, this is a powerful corporation, and it has no equal in terms of the number of users of social applications, but creating a Metaverse is a powerful investment and a huge expense. I am afraid that due to such a large momentum of this enterprise, this may affect the quality of services provided by the company at present. This transformation of Facebook is a chance to restore the company’s recently weakened image and Mark Zuckerberg’s very position as a leader. Let’s hope that this step is not just a marketing move, but is connected with real changes, and soon we will see a real breakthrough.
